09:15 - 10:15 AM  Cleantech Industry Funding

The Obama Administration directed $83B of the $787B stimulus bill to tax breaks and cleantech spending, spanning from companies that create renewable energy, such as solar and wind, to companies that make buildings and homes more energy-efficient and those that help to modernize electricity grids.  Although overall venture investment for startups is down 60% in Q1 09, cleantech investing remains one of the brighter spots.

The panel will examine whether stimulus funds are still available for cleantech investing and how to successfully obtain these funds, the impact of the recovery act (Buy American Provision), and the role of Silicon Valley and how your company can benefit.

01:00 - 02:00 PM  China

The Chinese economy will be the largest in the world within the next 5 years.  China already produces about 37% of all manufactured goods in the world and is experiencing double digit growth in both the domestic and export manufacturing sectors.  The Chinese middle class is growing by double digits and the demand for consumer goods and services is exploding.  China is projected to achieve 7-9% growth even in the wake of the global financial crisis, largely due to government spending, capital investment and a boost in lending by Chinese banks.  It must sustain at least 8% growth to avoid massive layoffs and political instability.   Few would deny that China will play a large part in pulling the world out of recession.

What are the opportunities and risks for U.S. capital investors and businesses in China in the recovering global economy?  The Chinese government also has the medium to long-term goal of transforming China's economy into one driven by domestic consumption and indigenous innovation.  What are the opportunities for U.S. businesses as China implements these long-term objectives?  What are the associated risks and how should U.S. businesses mitigate those risks?  China experts on this panel will address these and related topics.

03:15 - 04:15 PM  Fireside Chat:  CEO Perspectives on the U.S. and Asia in the Next Decade

The financial crisis has had a profound awakening for business leaders everywhere, prompting concern about Silicon Valley and U.S. competitiveness.  Today, successful competitive companies are those that can effectively leverage their core strengths into global business opportunities.  Thinking about hedging your bets with operations in Asia or worried about how to grow in the mature North American market?

In this session, two accomplished CEOs with diverse operating experience, who have built successful multi-billion dollar U.S. and Asia-centric companies, will explore the following topics and offer a forward-looking view on the opportunities and challenges of:

  • Managing through the downturn and positioning for an upturn
  • Maintaining profitability while delivering products and services that provide real value to customers
  • Blending cultures and leading a global organization
  • Maximizing strategy across regions when each has its own cycles, opportunities, challenges and culture
  • Aligning resources to new opportunities, including when and where to invest

04:30 - 05:30 PM  Capital Markets

Recent financial turmoil and drought in the capital markets have left companies unclear on the path to future funding and exits.  Market capitalizations are at their ten-year low, access to traditional sources of financing are limited and venture capital just experienced the lowest quarterly raise in more than seven years, all of which are leaving private and public companies alike questioning the requirements for growth and capital.

Whether it is discussing the changes that must happen to the venture capital ecosystem or encouraging the use of global funding sources, our esteemed panelists will provide us with their vision for 2010 and address the pressing concerns stemming from depressed capital markets:

  • How does the current U.S. economic environment affect the dynamics of M&A activity, including the flow of inbound and outbound M&A activities, volume, industry sector, timing and deal structure?
  • What are some key issues and considerations for an acquisition from a strategic buyer perspective, and are they different for a private company?
  • What are the special challenges, if any, for acquisitions in Asia?
  • What can we reasonably expect the venture capital industry to look like over the next 3-5 years?
  • How does an evolving VC model impact dynamic growth companies?
  • Will China's secondary board be a venue for value investments or will it be another casino?
  • Is there a clear move toward consolidation in various sectors?
  • What is the outlook for exits in 2010?
